Children are our future and at Torakan we take that very seriously. Both as productive members of society and as future martial arts instructors, every child is important.
There are three primary reasons for children to study the martial arts.
1. Physical Fitness: Children today spend too much time in front of the TV, game console or computer. Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. A lack of exercise can have a profound impact on the physical and mental health of a child for the rest of their life.
2. Discipline: In today’s society people with personal discipline usually have a decisive advantage over others. Martial arts is an ideal method of instilling self discipline and self-respect. It helps us learn how high our limits are and helps ground us in reality.
3. Confidence: Confidence instills self-respect and this is crucial to a person’s emotional wellbeing, both now and in the future.
Torakan will may accept students as young as 6 years old. The Shihan’s approval is required before a young student is accepted. The child must demonstrate an ability to pay attention and follow direction. This is usually done by allowing the child to attend a class or two and allowing the Shihan to evaluate the child. The parent may be asked to step out at some point to see how the child behaves with the absence of their parent(s). It is important the child can pay attention and listen so they do not distract others.
Another key to acceptance is the child. We try to make everyone feel comfortable but if the child is not interested, they cannot be forced.
Children may be suspended from attending class if their grades are substandard or they are caught fighting at school.
We are a family oriented dojo.
